Kingdom Two Crowns is a side scrolling strategy game developed by Thomas van den Berg and developer Coatsink and published by Raw Fury.

The game is unique in that is has a high replay factor without being overly complex like many strategy games. The core concept is build your fortifications and army and defeat the greed each night. To begin you’ll be island hopping until you’ve collected your desired upgrades and you’ll return to each island to finally conquer the greed. It’s fun, simple, and you can slip in and out without losing your momentum.

The pixel art style of the game may not be as flashy as some games but for me it adds to to the overall vibe in a positive way. This means loading times are pretty good and theres a nostalgic charm to the game that should be overlooked.

The pros of Kingdom Two Crowns:

  • Gameplay requires a good amount of planning.
  • Resource management as its just gold and people. Still levels of difficulty with seasons but not like other games with 3-10 resources.
  • Characters are weird and wonderful and add a different vibe to each play through.
  • Gives cozy vibes to a strategy game without being overly simple.

The cons of Kingdom Two Crowns:

  • Character movement is very slow, portals help but in the late middle game you can spend an entire in game day travelling from one side of your fortress to another and not have enough time for repairs.
  • Running out of resources and being obliterated basically ends your current game unless you’re willing to try and wait for the occasional errant coin drop when in winter.

The Verdict

It’s a small list of cons as overall I found Kingdom Two Crowns quite enjoyable and without many drawbacks. I wouldn’t say it’s a game for everyone but it’s definitely got the bear seal of approval.

Bear Rating 8.5 out of 10.
