The Alters, developed by 11 Bit Studios, is a choice-driven survival experience set on a hostile, desolate planet with some deeply unsettling properties. As survival games go, 11 Bit Studios once again push the stress dial well past comfortable levels. Short days dictated by lethal radiation, an ever-approaching sunrise that will kill you outright, and planetary anomalies that seem actively determined to end your run all combine to create relentless pressure. Layered on top of this are constant moral and ethical decisions, many of which force you to question how far you are willing to go when survival itself is on the line.
Playing The Alters
Moment to moment, the game is genuinely enjoyable to play through, and aside from one or two rough edges, it holds together well. Base building is engaging without becoming overwhelming, and the requirement to keep your base as light as possible in order to move it acts as an excellent balancing mechanic. It prevents excess, encourages planning, and reinforces the constant tension between preparedness and mobility.
The systems work best when they overlap. Resource gathering, research, base management, and time pressure all feed into one another, creating a loop that feels demanding but purposeful. When things are going well, you feel clever. When they are not, the game is quick to remind you that every poor decision has consequences.
Story and Themes
The narrative is where The Alters truly shines. The story pulls you into a web of corporate exploitation, scientific ethics, personal regret, and fractured identity. Your alters are not just gameplay tools; each represents a different life path, complete with their own emotional baggage and unresolved conflicts. These stories unfold through gameplay, therapy sessions, and sometimes through neglect, allowing you to shape outcomes by action or inaction.
There is also a surprisingly human thread running through the experience, including attempts to repair relationships from the past, most notably with your ex-wife. These moments ground the high-concept sci-fi premise in something personal and relatable.
Friction Points
One area the game struggles with is communication, particularly during Act 2. The pressure surrounding preparation for moving your base is not explained clearly enough. If you do not begin researching and building from day one, you can quickly find yourself boxed into failure with very little room to recover. The margin for error here is slim, and while this suits the game’s unforgiving tone, clearer signalling would have helped players plan more effectively without dulling the challenge.
Who Is The Alters Game For?
This is a game for players who enjoy stress, pressure, and the need to hyperfocus. It rewards careful planning, emotional resilience, and a tolerance for difficult choices. If you are looking for something relaxed or forgiving, this is very much not that game.
Bear Rating: 7.5/10 🐻
A tense, thoughtful survival experience that occasionally trips over its own urgency, but remains compelling throughout.
