Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.5 update opens console modding—and gives V a second gun

Night City is getting a more personal kind of upgrade. Cyberpunk 2077’s next patch lets console players install selected community mods from inside the game, while a new perk gives V the option of carrying a pistol or revolver in each hand. One change expands who can alter the game; the other changes how they can fight through it.

CD Projekt Red’s 2.5 patch notes, published on 21 October, schedule the Edgerunners 2 update for 22 October on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the Steam, GOG and Epic versions on Mac. Switch 2 and the Mac App Store edition follow in the days afterwards.

A door opens for console mods, with a clear trade-off

The new mod.io integration offers an in-game selection of player-created mods across the supported platforms. CD Projekt Red calls it a first step and says more will follow. There is an immediate consequence for console players: achievements and trophies cannot be earned while playing from a modded save.

That is worth knowing before experimenting, rather than discovering after completing something difficult. The choice is between the changes a particular mod offers and the progression goals attached to that playthrough. Players following a trophy list have a concrete reason to read the new menu carefully.

The selection also matters as much as the existence of a browser. “Mod support” can describe a huge range of possibilities, from small visual alterations to ambitious changes that affect how a game behaves. The announcement does not establish that everything available through existing PC modding routes will transfer into the console catalogue.

Even a limited starting collection can broaden who gets to experiment. Installing something through the game itself removes a practical barrier for players who have never managed files or mod tools on a PC. What will make the feature valuable is the quality and usefulness of the catalogue it grows into.

Double Trouble is a new build commitment

The Cool tree gains Double Trouble and four supporting perks, enabling dual-wielding for Power pistols and revolvers. The category restriction is important: the patch does not promise that every pair of guns can be used together.

For returning players, a build change can be a more persuasive invitation than another cosmetic item. It offers a reason to rethink a familiar character and approach encounters differently. Whether it becomes a favourite will depend on the feel of aiming, movement and resource use, rather than the pleasure of seeing two weapons in the promotional footage.

The graphics work reaches beyond a new frame-rate label

NVIDIA’s 21 October briefing separately confirms a DLSS 4.5 upgrade for Cyberpunk, including Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and newer models for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation.

These features address different stages of the image. Super Resolution reconstructs output from a lower-resolution render; Ray Reconstruction handles reconstruction of ray-traced effects; frame generation adds displayed frames between conventionally rendered ones. A newer version number does not make them one interchangeable switch.

Frame generation can improve the impression of motion without producing the same increase in game simulation or input responsiveness. That distinction becomes especially relevant when a large multiplier is used in marketing. A high displayed frame rate is useful information, but so are the underlying rendered rate, latency and the stability of fine details in motion.

We discussed that distinction in our earlier look at NVIDIA’s model-performance claims. This new Cyberpunk release is a separate, game-specific update; it is not evidence that a quoted improvement elsewhere will reproduce itself in Night City.

Returning players have more than one reason to care

The console field-of-view slider is another practical addition in the patch notes. It gives players control over how much of the scene is visible, a setting that can materially change their comfort and sense of space.

There is no single headline that captures what 2.5 means for every platform. Some players gain a mod browser, some want a different weapon build, and others will focus on the rendering changes. The staggered release also means a Switch 2 owner should not expect the update simply because a PS5 owner has received it.

The strongest reason to return is the extra agency: more ways to shape V, the view and the surrounding game. Console modding makes that particularly significant. It invites players to treat Night City as something they can help reshape, while making the cost to achievement hunting explicit from the start.
