Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on October 23 as a separate purchase, with Game Pass subscribers facing a substantial wait for inclusion. Activision confirmed the arrangement on October 15, stating that the game will not join the service until Holiday 2027.
For players planning their autumn gaming budget, that is the important detail: a subscription will not provide launch access to the new game. Campaign early access is already underway, but it is tied to an eligible digital purchase.
The dates that matter
According to Activision’s standalone-release announcement, the full release arrives on October 23. Digital pre-orders include campaign early access from October 16 and DMZ early access from October 20. The publisher cautions that actual availability can vary with platform, time zone and outages.
The same announcement says Game Pass Ultimate retains access to Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III. This is therefore a distinction between the new release and the existing catalogue, rather than a statement that all Call of Duty games are leaving.
What is playable before launch?
Activision’s October 16 campaign update confirms that eligible digital Standard and Vault purchases unlock the complete campaign before the full launch. It lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2.
The campaign comprises sixteen missions, with its story centred partly on conflict across the Korean Peninsula. Completion rewards feed into Multiplayer and DMZ when the full game launches. We are keeping the story details out of this report; an access announcement should not require readers to dodge plot spoilers.
Early campaign availability should also be understood precisely. It does not mean every mode is already available, and campaign impressions alone cannot establish how the multiplayer experience will hold up.
The subscription calculation has changed
Our analysis: the practical question is whether someone wants this particular game immediately or is happy to wait. A player who subscribes chiefly for a new annual Call of Duty release now needs to compare a separate purchase with what they actually use elsewhere in the catalogue.
Someone regularly playing several other games may still find their subscription worthwhile. Someone keeping it mainly for Modern Warfare 4 has a different calculation. Neither conclusion requires declaring Game Pass universally good or bad; the value depends on the games a person will play, rather than the size of a headline library.
The gap also matters socially. If a regular squad moves to the new release, waiting for subscription access means more than delaying a solo campaign. It can mean staying behind while friends learn new maps and systems. That is a reason to assess the purchase honestly, rather than assume that a subscription and a standalone copy provide equivalent access.
Check the edition before paying
The official edition selector distinguishes Standard and Vault editions and details their extras. It also advertises a conditional Vault loyalty discount for eligible previous players and lists TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements for PC.
Those conditions deserve a look before checkout. A discount on a more expensive edition is only useful if its additional content is something you wanted. Likewise, an early-access benefit has diminishing value as launch approaches. Buyers should check their own platform’s final price and eligibility rather than assume every promotion applies to every account.
What remains unanswered
The announcement provides a Holiday 2027 Game Pass window, not an exact inclusion date. It also does not establish that this release decision will apply to every future Call of Duty. Claims about a permanent franchise-wide policy would go beyond the information published here.
For now, the purchasing decision is clear enough: playing Modern Warfare 4 at launch requires buying it separately. Whether the game merits that purchase will depend on its quality across the modes players actually care about, something an access announcement cannot settle.
